Day 27 ~ SRD

I should think of training topics to discuss on SRDs because these entries are really boring.

I didn’t do any training. It was good.

LOL.

I did go food shopping. That entails walking to the bus stop, then walking from the bus stop to Trader Joe’s, doing the shopping, then walking to the subway, taking the train to my stop, and carrying the groceries home.

So… I guess if you’ve got any questions or things you want me to cover? Ask away! I’m not an expert on anything but me, but I’ll give it a shot!

Day 26 ~ Long Run + Yoga

Hey, don’t laugh. 5 miles is a long run for me so far! Actually I was slightly over because I didn’t hit my Garmin the right way and ran for a minute or so without it recording the time.

Anyway… I’d gotten to Central Park early because I was one of the Front Runners telling my story for our “It Gets Better” video! We were to be in team gear, and my only thing was my singlet. And it was really chilly outside. I get the “dress for 15 degrees cooler” thing, but sleeveless in the temps this morning was just not a good idea. So I had a black Old Navy yoga jacket on over my FR singlet. David, the guy who was heading it up loaned me his long-sleeve shirt to wear for my segment…it was labeled S but you know what? It fit. A little more form fitting than I usually wear, but it fit! I ended up buying my own long sleeved shirt today – a M just so I have a little extra room. Next paycheck I’ll get a short-sleeved one, so then I’ll be set for any weather. :)

Anyway…I’ll let y’all know when and where the video is posted. I taped my segment, a small group segment with 3 other women where we all said “It gets better!” and ad libbed some stuff, and then our whole group huddling together and screaming “It gets better!”

Then it was off for my run. I went counter-clockwise to avoid ending on an uphill note. However, that meant I had to face a nemesis as great as The Beast. Cat Hill. Just as long as The Beast and maybe a little steeper. But just as I did with The Beast, I conquered Cat Hill! Ran for the whole interval I had on it and then started running when my next run interval started and I was almost at the top.

I do admit on the other side of the park, I did drop to a walk for most of a run interval that was on a slow, gradual climb and literally my legs were not going to go if I kept running.

Including warm-up and cool-down, I did 5.75 miles in an hour and 15 minutes. Good to know since I’ll have to do my run early next week because we have the club pancake breakfast (since so many of them are doing the NYC Marathon there really won’t be a fun run…but we have lots of activities: a pasta dinner, a pancake breakfast, and then I’ll be volunteering at the Mile 24 water station! Woo!), so I can know what time I need to plan on starting my run.

Came home and really fought with myself to do Yoga for the Warrior. I was – and still am – tired. I decided to just not go into my bedroom and just do the workout. I did have to pull out of a couple of poses because of hip cramps, but overall I felt good, and I’m glad I did it.

I had a good dinner, and a nice hot shower…and now I’m convincing myself to stay up until at least 8 so I don’t wake up at like 2 or 3. But man, I’m tired today!!

Day 25 ~ X-T

X-T day today. I did Jillian’s Banish Fat Boost Metabolism. Was a little sluggish in a couple of places, but overall it was a good workout.

Nothing really exciting to report today. It’s late and I’m sleepy and I have to be up early tomorrow.

Training Day 24 ~ AMAZING day!!

Wow! My second magical run day in a row!! Well…in a row in terms of run days. There was an x-t day and an SRD day in between.

I got home from school and changed, then headed out to Prospect Park. My total distance including warm-up and cool-down was 3.84 miles!! Ok, it’s only .02 of a mile further than I did on Monday, but there are other things to take into consideration.

Like what I’ve come to call “the beast”. Well, when I’m feeling generous. When I’m not, some words I’m not going to force you to read escape my lips when describing it. It’s this long, gradual hill that I swear never seems to stop. I have never been able to start or keep running up it – every run interval where it’s concerned has been dropped to a walk or started as a walk.

But today???

Today I kept running the whole interval that was going when I started it AND I started running at the start of the next running interval that started while I was still on it!!!!! AND my pace for that interval that was almost the whole thing on the beast? My average pace was at a 12:42 minute mile!!!!

I. Am. Proud!!!!!!!

Oh…and I decided to put my name in the lottery for the NYC Half Marathon. It’s in March. I’ll find out sometime after 11:59pm on November 15 – that’s when lottery registration closes. We’ll see what happens. I’ve got a couple of other spring half marathons I’m eyeing if I don’t get drawn in the lottery for the NYC one.

Oops! Revised Race Sched!

I just realized I left off one very important race from my schedule! It was completely inadvertent, the forgetting it! But it’s gonna be a great one!!

Here is the complete registered-for race sched!

11/25 ~ Prospect Park Turkey Trot 5M
12/5 ~ NYRR Joe Kleinerman 10K
12/11 ~ NYRR Jingle Jog
12/31 (or 1/1) ~ NYRR Emerald Nuts Midnight Run
1/7 ~ Buzz and Woody’s Best Friends 5K (with my sister!!!!!!!)
1/8 ~ Walt Disney World Half Marathon

Woohoo!!!

Training Day 23 – SRD…and upcoming schedule

Nothing much to report in terms of training today. It was a rest day. Woo!

BUT I added in another race. I know, I know. But it’ll be fun and give me practice in races and running MY pace and not the pace of everyone else around me!

Here’s my race schedule as of now:

11/25 ~ Prospect Park Track Club Turkey Trot 5M
12/5 ~ NYRR Joe Kleinerman 10K
12/11 ~ NYRR Jingle Jog 4M in Prospect Park
12/31 (or 1/1) ~ Emerald Nuts Midnight Run 4M
1/8 ~ Walt Disney World Half Marathon

I’m looking into a spring marathon – possibly the Country Music Half or the Ottawa Half. We’ll see.

I can’t register yet, but Labor Day weekend will definitely be the Disneyland Half!!

And long-term, I’m thinking January 2012 the Walt Disney World Full and November 2012 the NYC Marathon!!

Oh yeah… Gotta share this. I feel like I’m really a runner now – totally in the mindset. And how do I figure this? This morning I was on the forums for National Novel Writing Month. I saw a thread titled “Day One 5K Dash. Who’s In?” and my first reaction was “Ooh! I wonder where the race is and if I can swing it!” Um…no. They meant writing 5000 words. Not running 3.1 miles. Hee!

Training Day 22 ~ When You Just Don’t Want To…

You know it’s bound to happen. No matter how well training is going, you’re going to hit one of those days when you just don’t want to do ANYTHING!

I should have known today would be one of those days. My run yesterday was just about perfect. I didn’t really feel tired, I kept a steady pace, I felt great during it and when it was over. And looking back my toughest days have always followed the golden days.

It probably didn’t help that I’m really tired too. I love taking a writing class, but when it goes until 10pm and it’s in Times Square, I’m not getting home until 11ish. AND I forgot how much the caffeine in a chai tea latte affects me. I seriously would have been better getting a cappuccino. Oy!

But yes. Today was a monumental struggle for me to make myself do ANYTHING. I decided to get dressed and go to the gym so I’d be forced to do some type of cross-training. Yes I’ve got the dvds at home, but if I’m home, there’s nothing and no one stopping me from just shutting it off. And yeah, at the gym no one is MAKING me do anything, but it’s that peer pressure – or at least perceived peer pressure. I would feel stupid just doing 5 or 10 minutes on a machine and then leaving. Sure the people around me might not really pay attention, but I’m pretty sure the people at the desk would notice since they’re the same pretty much all the time.

So then it was which machine to use. I really don’t like the ellipticals. Probably because they remind me of those stupid Nordic Track things that I could never figure out how to work. I failed at cross country skiing the time I tried it too. I know that it’s NOT like that, the elliptical, but for some reason it reminds me of it. I also don’t like trying to stop and reverse – it seems like no matter how careful I am, at least once I end up accidentally stopping the workout and then I have to restart. So I didn’t want that. And the bike… Well, either my butt was going to hurt or I’d feel like I was too lazy using the recumbent one.

So that left the Cybex cross-trainer. It’s some kind of torture device that’s a combination of an elliptical AND a stair climber I guess is the best way to describe it. I’ve done it once before. I feel slightly more balanced on it than the elliptical, so that’s a plus. So… Onto Mr. Cybex I got.

The first 15 minutes were sheer hell. Part of it, granted, was me trying to do too much. Once I got it leveled down from 4 to 2 things went a lot better. I also had to get my brain out of the way – and that was harder because my iPod was out of charge and I could not make the thing connected to the TV or Planet Fitness Radio work, so I was reading subtitles and sort of hearing the music over the loudspeakers.

But then somewhere around the 15 minute mark, I just settled in and did it. And it wasn’t that bad after I just settled in. I can’t explain why it happened or even what happened, but I made it work. And it felt good.

Oh…and in case you were wondering what the impact of the change from level 4 to level 2 was, I still burned 375 calories and kept my heart at an average of 149bpm. So there!

Who knows…maybe I’ll do it again on Friday and split the difference. Try level 3.

Training Day 21 ~ Interval Run

Today was one of those great days out running. Everything felt good. I managed to stay at a pretty consistent pace the whole time – and it was a good one too. It was one of those days you with every day could be like.

Granted, they can’t all be like that. But it’s nice to have them to remember on those horrible days. It’s like “Yes, I CAN run…maybe just not today.”

My average pace was 12:51 (and that included my cool down…long story with the warm-up…I was a dork and forgot how to change to my intervals, so the timing looks all kinds of screwy on Garmin Connect), and apparently I got up to as high as 8:18. Wow! Go me!!!

Also? I’m now signed up for a Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning! 5 miles in Prospect Park! Woohoo!!! I’m excited!!!!

Training Day 21 – SRD

Yes, I know I had said I was going to do yoga today, but that ended up not happening.

I stayed at church to get trained as a thurifer – so now I can swing the smoke pot!! Woohoo!!!! Then I just went to Trader Joe’s to get more healthy foodstuffs directly rather than coming home and going back. And when I got home it was around 4:30, so I decided that was ok. A rest day it would be.

I do need to go and spend some quality time with the foam roller as my calves are pretty tight right now.

Tomorrow is a 3:2 for 40 minutes day. Since I’ve got writing class, I’ll probably just go hamster around Von King Park since that’s my warm-up walk and cool-down walk away. Much easier when time is an issue.

Training Day 20 – long run

Another 4-mile run today at a 3:2 interval. I decided to go the opposite way from what I’ve done before. Not only does that keep me from “knowing” where I am in the route, it means that I don’t have to run UP Cat Hill. I HATE Cat Hill.

Don’t get me wrong…there are still hills going the other way, but they’re more gradual and not all at once. Much more manageable. And I only had to slip to walking once!! Woohoo!!

Overall I felt great! My pace was good – running pace was 11:17-13:02; walking pace was 13:27-15:11 (when I was going for the inhaler to be safe). Woot!! My average pace got screwed up because I did my cool-down by stepping in place since the one thing with going the way I went today that’s awkward is I can’t not stop at the group gathering. So that messed up my pace. I think I may just not program in a cool down next week just in case. That way my pace doesn’t get all thrown off.

After running club, I hit Paragon Sports to spend my gift card and racked up! One vest, one t-shirt, one sports bra, two pair of running capri tights, three pair of socks, and four mint chocolate GU packets! AND I’ve still got some money left on the card! WOOT!!! Very exciting!!

Came home with enough time to shower and head out for a farewell party for a girl from running club who’s moving to London. Much fun!! Ate too much, but it’s ok. I can burn it off!

And now I’m tired and am going to bed! Night!! Tomorrow I shall do yoga!
