General Training Update

I’ve been in Orlando on Christmas vacation – and other than trying to figure out about flights with weather in NYC, didn’t pay for internet at Disney.

So since I’m online I must be home, right?

WRONG!

I’m at my sister’s house until New Year’s Day. Thanks Mother Nature!

That said, I did get a 7ish mile run in on Christmas Day. And did enough walking the rest of the time that I feel I made up for it. I’ll do a jog tomorrow and probably Friday as well.

Feeling good about things. Just chilling and enjoying the bonus vacation for now. Woo!

Training Day 80 ~ Woohoo! Running again!!

So today was the day back attempting a workout after resting for three days thanks to my twingy IT band. I soooooo needed it. I was feeling like a giant slug!!

Because of scheduling and stuff, I went to the gym to run on the treadmill (also easier to deal with than say Prospect Park if the knee started protesting). I decided it wouldn’t hurt to run in the heated gym in case it’s on the warmer side this year for the Half Marathon at Disney.

It went well!!! I felt good all the way through the run, so woo!!!! It was 10 reps of 4:1. Then I did a lot of good stretching, focusing on my IT band yoga poses and other stretches. Aaaaaahhhhhh!!!!

Came home, ate, got a hot shower, and have bonded some more with The Stick. It’s now packed in the bag to get ready to go to Disney for Christmas. Yay!!! If only I’d been tired at say 7 so I could have taken a nap. I’m a little afraid to try a nap now for fear I won’t wake up when the alarm goes off. I figure another hour, hour and a half and I’ll head in. Hit the post office that’s open 24/7, and then hit a 24-hour Starbucks for caffeine before meeting my shuttle to the airport.

I’m not sure if I’m going to get internet while I’m down there… I’ll keep written notes if I’m not and fill you in on everything once I’m back! :)

Training Day 79 ~ One more rest day

Yes…one more rest day. I will do something tomorrow…preferably run. I have to do a few things after school, so I’m thinking it may be the gym and the treadmill. Ugh. But I will make it work. I feel like a slug right now. I know I needed to take the days off to let the IT band settle, but still.

SLUG!

In other news, I have a new bathing suit. There is a chance we might go to Blizzard Beach on Friday afternoon, and my other suit was a bit big. Worst-case I could have made it work. But hey, new suit! :)

Training Day 78 ~ Keep Calm and Carry On

Nothing new to report. Took today as another rest day. Bonded with The Stick. Did Cow Face pose. All is well. The IT Band is generally feeling ok.

One more rest day and then I’m going to do a light trot on Thursday – before packing my bags to go to Newark airport at o dark hundres hours. And then Disney for Christmas!! WOO!

Training Day 77 ~ Unscheduled (but nice) rest

So given my twingy IT band, I took an unscheduled rest day today.

Well, actually after 9.3 miles yesterday I probably would have done that anyway, but the IT band just gave me an excuse.

It’s been good – I got a little bit of extra speedy walking in going from the Duane Reade where my prescription refill was SUPPOSED to be called in only to discover that rather than actually listen to my message completely, the scrip refill department at my health clinic just went with the one on file (that will be changing ASAP), so it’s sitting in Brooklyn. And after 35 minutes on the phone with the scrip refill department, I had no answer as to why they hadn’t listened to the message but we had determined that because it was already sent in to another Duane Reade it couldn’t be changed. So I’ll be without that med for a day. Joy.

Had a great night at a reading though, so yay!

Now to use The Stick and than go to bed!

(Oh…the knee is feeling a lot better. I’ll still rest tomorrow though just to be sure.)

Training day 76 ~ My first EVER 15K!!!!!!

This morning I made the trek (and yes, from Brooklyn on a weekend EARLY morning it’s a trek) up to Central Park for the NYRR Ted Corbitt 15K. My debut at this distance.

Thanks to baggage check being on the entrance road, I had slightly more time to spare today…but only by a little. At least I wasn’t having to hike back over a hill! Got lined up, the national anthem was sung, and we were off. Thankfully without the “We need EMTs at the start NOW” going on this time!

Pre-race fuel was a peanut butter and banana smoothie and water at home, caramel VIA on the train, and PowerBar Strawberry-Banana Energy Gels about 45 minutes out with some water. I opted to go with a 4:1 run:walk ratio again, and it worked well this time. I also used the “just look 5 feet in front of you” technique when I knew a hill was coming up. Made the hills doable without dropping to a walk for the most part – proving that hills really are more mental than anything for me. At least hills of the more gradual type.

When I got to the 96th St transverse on the west side, a couple of my Front Runners teammates were there with the Front Runners banner and a poster with the names of all the FRNY women running. What a way to start!!

I was near one of our older FRNY guys for a good bit of the time – we kept leap-frogging back and forth as I went through my run:walk thing. He was great encouragement as well!

The first loop ~ 4 miles…aka the central loop in the park ~ went amazingly well. I even managed to do all my running interval on Cat Hill that time. At about mile 3.5 we heard vehicles and were all told to move to the left as the lead runners were coming through. We all had a good chuckle about that – we hadn’t even finished one loop yet and people were about to finish. Woo!

When I got to the east side of the 96th St transverse, my FRNY support team had moved over there with different signs. I handed my gloves off to them because they were making my hands extra hot and sort of tingly (not really…more fluttery? it’s hard to explain). They cheered me on and I kept going.

Just before the fluid station on the 102nd St transverse, I sucked down my GU Mint Chocolate, then grabbed som more water. Just after that, I made a quick pit stop and kept going.

Connected up with Sam again on the west side. About halfway down the main loop, he saw one of the photogs on the course who he knows, so he yelled an intro of me, and the result was probably my favorite race pic so far…

Continued on around, still keeping up my 4:1 and feeling really good. This loop, we added in the bottom part. Somewhere along the way there was another FRNY cheerleader…but I was in a zone and not really noticing what else was going on.

Once I hit mile 6, I was essentially in unknown territory. Prior to this, my longest run was 10K. Amazingly, I felt stronger as I went on for the most part.

I will admit I walked most of Cat Hill the second time around. BUT I ran until my legs were refusing to run anymore. I was able to start back running at the next run interval, so that was good.

My hamstrings were starting to get a little sore, so I slowed up my pace a little. (I’m going to roll them out with The Stick in a few minutes.)

Martha and AJ were still around the 96th St area on the east side, and OMG did their cheers help me keep going and push a little harder. I knew I was almost to the end. And puzzle of puzzles I wasn’t feeling like I was about to drop. I mean, I felt the effort, but I wasn’t dragging like I’d been at that same point on the path when I was running the 10K.

I passed the 9-mile marker and bore down to finish strong. At that point everyone along the sides of the course was cheering everyone in. It felt really good. And I was alone enough crossing the finish mats, I got announced coming in. WOW!

I smiled big for the camera (we’ll see how it comes out), then walked to the fluid station tables and downed a couple of cups of Gatorade. Then I walked up the hill and stretched before walking over to baggage and then over to our Front Runners Women’s “BGB” (Big Girl Breakfast).

My left knee has started doing the ITB tweaky thing my right knee did after my first 10K – but it feels slightly better. I know what to do for it – ice, rest…some good, gentle stretching…and 3 days off. Hopefully it will respond the same as the right one did.

But overall, I feel really good. I’m totally proud of myself for this one!

Final time? 1:51:23
Average pace? 11:58 (to put that one in perspective…my average pace in my last NYRR race that was used for corral placement in this one? was 12:32)

Training Day 75 ~ “Rest”

Because of my race tomorrow, today turned into an SRD.

Well, kind of. I still did a lot of walking. Went to the UPS hub to get my packages – a RunDisney tech shirt and a Half Marathon Vinylmation from my RWOL BF Secret Santa, a shirt I’d gotten from NYRR, and my present FOR my sister (nope Andrea, it’s not that easy!!). Then went into Manhattan to get some stuff from The Body Shop, get some more PowerBar Energy Gels…and also got The Stick! Woo!!, then hiked up to get lunch, made the mistake of going in Macy’s, then went to help with confirmation, and then back to Union Square to get my co-worker Secret Santa person a present. And finally home.

Now I’m relaxing. I’ll pin the number and lay out the clothes in a few, take a hot shower, and then go to bed to try and sleep.

Tomorrow? My first 15K.

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!

Oh… Also???

THREE WEEKS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Training Day 74 ~ XT

This afternoon I did the 30 Day Shred Level 3! Woo!

I was proud that I did the walking planks on my toes rather than my knees. AND I didn’t faceplant partway through like I used to do.

I’m probably not going to make it to Fun Run tomorrow because UPS is stupid. Just a note…pay NO attention to the times where the driver checks off the time for the next attempted delivery. I have it straight from a UPS phone agent that they mean NOTHING. But I already figured that one out…why else would they have attempted delivery at 10:34am when after 5pm had been checked on the form the driver left.

Yeah. Not happy. So I get to spend a couple of hours tomorrow going out to the UPS hub to get 3 packages. I’m pretty sure I know what one is, pretty sure another is from my runnersworld.com beginner’s forum Secret Santa…but the third one I’m clueless about. Surprise!

But now? I’m fighting to keep my eyes open, so I’m getting some sleep. Rest is part of training too, after all!!

Training Day 72 ~ In which I prove I’ve got “brass ovaries”

Yep! I ran tonight! One of two women who did. (I didn’t see the other one…I started early because I didn’t want people to have to hang out waiting for me.)

It. Was. Cold.

But I did it!! The whole middle loop of Central Park. AND I ran up Cat Hill!! Woohoo!!!! Go me!!!! I’m proud!

Then met up with some of the other girls at Amsterdam Ale House to celebrate Holly’s birthday. Good times. And YUMMY bison burger!!!!!!!

Oh…and the NYC Half Marathon? This local girl got lucky and I AM IN!!! March 20th baby!! Woohoo!!!! I’m sad for everyone who wanted to run it and didn’t get in. I would have been very sad too. I just sort of assumed it would be done along the lines of the full – with weighted entries for non-locals. I was a shocked as anyone to see “Accepted” on my page. But I’m thrilled and I’m going to do it proud!!
